Assistive Technology


Assistive Technology Unit (AT unit) was established to provide services in specialized in assistive devices and technologies for people with disabilities. Assistive devices are products and tools that can make a person’s life easier. AT team assesses for needs of individuals with disabilities, and provide appropriate devices/technologies as well as giving advice on home and environmental modification.

Target groups
individuals with physical/mobility disabilities, individuals with visual disabilities, and family members.

Team
services are provided by physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), a rehabilitation counselor, health officers, and
technicians. The team is trained to serve specific needs of an individual. So, the person can function more independently.

 

Service


Assistive devices

Clients will be prescribed an assistive device by a doctor. They will be then sent to the AT unit for assessment and selection of types of devices. Assessments will be conducted by a team for finding out the person’s capacities and limitations, skills, life styles, and living environments before selecting an appropriate device. Persons with disabilities can receive a device under their medical schemes (i.e. universal coverage, civil servant, social security)

All individuals who receive a device will be trained how to use and maintenance the device properly. Training will be provided by therapists.

Repair and modification

Clients can bring a broken device to discuss with the doctor for repair or modification. Technicians provide services to make the devices ready to use.

Postural support devices/ Seating

Individuals, who have postural problems or difficulties in sitting upright, can receive postural support devices. This will help them to sit more comfortable.

Wheelchair skill training

All wheelchair users will be provided skill training for enhancing them to use the wheelchair safely and effectively. There are three levels of skills including basic, advanced, and special skills. The users will be trained according to their personal goals.

Rehabilitation counseling (RC)

Rehabilitation counselor provides services in supporting an individual to accept and adjust to his/her disability. The counselor will assess strengths, weakness, listen to and giving feedback on the client’s feeling and thoughts. The client will be supported for finding options to rehabilitation, daily living, and plans for education, work, or social participation.

Vision rehabilitation

Services provided to clients who have visual disabilities (blindness/low vision). The services are including visual stimulation, low vision aids, activities of daily living (ADL) training, orientation and mobility (O&M) training, and home modification.

Exhibition center in assistive technology and devices

The center provides information and training in assistive technologies and devices as well as home and environmental modification.

To receive the services
1. Clients register as SNMRI patients, and make appointments to see a PM&R doctor at OPD.
2. After prescription for assistive devices, the clients will be sent to AT unit (disabled person comes with PWD card every time)

Vision rehabilitation clinic
1. Clients call 0 – 2591 – 5455 ext. 6798, 6794 to make an appointment
2. See an ophthalmologist and team on the date of appointment. (disabled person comes with PWD card and treatment history).
3. Receive rehabilitation programs on the date of appointments.
